Wayne Business Association awards honor volunteers
By Sam Strike
TThe Wayne Business Association awarded its 2010 Benjamin V.M. Wilson Community Service award at a dinner last month to Carol Tatta, who was founder and director of Family Forum, a parenting center, and former director and teacher of Central Nursery School, both in Wayne.
Tatta, a longtime Wayne resident and Eastern University graduate, "epitomizes service and leadership," according to the nomination submitted by her co-workers at the nursery school.
She was co-founder of the group Parents and Friends of Exceptional Children and co-chair of annual giving for Eastern University, and has done hours of pro bono parental consulting by telephone and in person over the years, according to those who nominated her for the award.
"There are a lot of families out there that Carol has helped," said her husband, Joe, at the WBA awards dinner April 15.
Benjamin V.M. Wilson, a local banker, was a community volunteer in Wayne and Radnor Township for many years until his death in 2000.
The WBA and Bryn Mawr Trust Company, where Wilson worked, honor his memory every year by awarding someone in the community who emulates his spirit and volunteerism.
Tatta is giving the award's $500 honorarium provided by Bryn Mawr Trust to Family Forum, the parenting center that she founded.
David Brennan, general manager of the Wayne Hotel, was this year's recipient of the Lawrence T. Adelberger Sr. Award, presented annually to a WBA member for exemplary volunteer service for the Wayne Business Association and its membership.
Accepting the award on his behalf at the WBA awards dinner was his colleague, Anita Sayers, executive director of marketing and public relations for the Wayne Hotel.
"David's dedication to and enthusiasm for the town of Wayne is so evident; he is Wayne's number-one champion," Sayers said.
Brennan, upon receiving the award, said that he is "truly humbled and I share this award with all of the WBA board members. It has been an honor to serve on the WBA Board for the past few years and a pleasure to work with all members."
